Irregular Verbs Learning Games
Level: intermediate
Procedure:
This a competition to be played in pairs: student A and B
Whole class: As decide on a letter to challenge Bs.
Bs will have one minute to write as many irregular verbs (infinitive-past-past participle) beginning with the selected letter as they can think of.
Irregular verbs will be awarded 1 or 2 points depending on the difficulty of their spelling or on their frequency at an intermediate level.
Set a timer for the allotted time and when time is up, display the answers by clicking on the interactive letter.
Student B gets 1 point or 2 points (depending on the verb) only if he has correctly spelt the verb in the past and past participle.
Now, it ‘s Student B’s turn
NOTE: What do As or Bs do while it’s the other student’s turn to compete? They can also do the challenge, but no points will be awarded!

Past Habits: Used to & Would
Past habit – used to/would/past simple
When we talk about things that happened in the past but don’t happen anymore we can do it in different ways.
Used to
Used to
- We used to live in New York when I was a kid.
- There didn’t use to be a petrol station there. When was it built?
We can use ‘used to’ to talk about past states ….
- I used to go swimming every Thursday when I was at school.
- I used to smoke but I gave up a few years ago.
… or we can use ‘used to’ to talk about repeated past actions and generalizations in the past, such as Most people in the south used to be farmers.
Remember that ‘used to’ is only for past states/actions that don’t happen now – we can’t use it for things that still happen now. Also, ‘used to + infinitive’ should not be confused with ‘be/get used to + ‘ing’ form’ – this is covered in a separate section.

The Order of Adjectives
Sometimes you want to use more than one adjective to describe something (or someone).
What happens if a hat is both brown AND old?
Do we say… an old brown hat OR a brown old hat?
An old brown hat is correct because a certain order for adjectives is expected.
A brown old hat sounds incorrect or not natural.
This chart is only a guide and is the order that is preferred.
You may see or hear slight variations of the order of adjectives in real life though what appears in the chart is the order that is expected the most.

An interesting old Indian rug.
A striped silk shirt
Some comfortable black sleeping bags
Four small round wooden tables
Those funny little old men
